Unvented Cylinder Upgrade in Dulwich

The Brief

A family in Dulwich had been living with the consequences of a gravity-fed hot-water system for years. Three bathrooms in a Victorian terrace, weak shower flow at every outlet, and a tangle of loft tanks taking up half the storage space. They asked Primeworks for a survey and a fixed quote to replace the lot with an unvented cylinder driven straight off the mains.

What We Did

The work over a planned two-day visit:

• Mains pressure and flow test: Confirmed the incoming supply could comfortably feed a 250 L unvented cylinder with all showers running. Test took about 30 minutes and was included free.
• Drained and stripped the old system: Drained the redundant cold-water tank and feed pipe in the loft, removed both tanks, and capped the legacy supply at the rising main.
• Fitted the 250 L unvented cylinder: Installed in the airing cupboard with the expansion vessel, temperature-and-pressure relief valves, and discharge pipework required by Building Regulations Part G3.
• Reworked the hot-water circuits: Connected all three bathrooms and the kitchen on a balanced supply so flow stays consistent when more than one outlet is in use.
• Commissioned, tested, and certified: Pressurised the system, ran every outlet, verified the safety valves, and issued the Building Regs G3 notification.
• Cleaned up: Took away the old tanks, packaging, and all debris. Reclaimed loft storage now usable for the first time in years.

The Result

Mains-pressure hot water at every outlet, full flow even with two showers running, and a noticeably tidier loft. The family now has a G3-registered installation, a manufacturer warranty on the cylinder, and the original 30-minute free mains test confirmed the upgrade was a clean fit for the property.

Job Duration: Two days from initial survey to final commissioning, including the loft tank strip-out and clean-up.
